- "You're special, son."
— Geppetto
Giuseppe Geppetto is a character in Lies of P.
Background[]
Giuseppe Geppetto was a genius engineer and a member of the Alchemists. By creating a mechanical heart that harnessed the power of Ergo, Geppetto became the father of Puppets. In a transformative turn of events, Geppetto's pioneering work ushered in a golden age for the city of Krat. What was once a struggling rural town transformed into a thriving metropolis. However, this metamorphosis was not without its sacrifices.
Regrettably, Geppetto's unwavering commitment to his mechanical masterpieces led him to neglect his son, Carlo. Consumed by his ceaseless tinkering and invention, Geppetto sent Carlo away to the Monad Charity House, an act that sowed the seeds of resentment within the young boy. Over the years, this festering animosity reached a boiling point when Geppetto failed to attend Carlo's graduation ceremony, leaving the boy emotionally scarred and openly resentful toward his father. Carlo's bitter words expressed his deep-seated hatred, to the point where he declared that he did not care if his father died. In a poignant act of defiance and resentment, Carlo gave away the precious necklace Geppetto had gifted him to his dear friend, Romeo.
Tragedy struck, however, as Carlo fell victim to the devastating Petrification Disease and succumbed to its cruel grasp. His untimely demise shattered Geppetto, plunging him into a deep depression and igniting a fiery loathing for the Alchemists, whose experiments were responsible for Carlo's tragic affliction. Geppetto became consumed by a singular desire to be reunited with his son. Geppetto transformed Carlo's corpse into a puppet, hoping to revive him by transferring Carlo's Ergo into it. However, the puppet's Ergo efficiency was not only inefficient, but it was also destructive. Not wanting to risk the destruction of his son's Ergo, Geppetto removed the P-Organ and sealed the puppet away in a trunk. He set up a secret workshop in an old train car in Krat Central Station, intent on creating a new puppet capable of absorbing Ergo, thus reinforcing the P-Organ so that Carlo's body would not destroy it.
Over the ensuing years, Geppetto collaborated with Lorenzini Venigni working tirelessly to enhance puppet production and refine their designs. While Venigni urged Geppetto to bind every puppet with the Grand Covenant to prevent violent tendencies akin to the notorious serial killer Arlecchino, Geppetto harbored a hidden agenda. He surreptitiously introduced a "Zero Law" to the Grand Covenant, ensuring that every puppet would unfailingly obey his commands.
As the Petrification Disease continued its devastating spread throughout Krat, Simon Manus escalated his experiments on the afflicted populace, resulting in horrifying mutations referred to as Carcass. Geppetto, resolute in his mission to thwart the Alchemists and revive his son, activated the Zero Law to initiate the Puppet Frenzy. Placing Romeo's Ergo into a puppet body, Geppetto anointed him as the "King of Puppets". Geppetto directed all puppets to eliminate all those infected with the Petrification Disease. Amidst these machinations, Geppetto stole the Arm of God, a revered relic employed by the Alchemists and integral to Carlo's resurrection. However, Geppetto was unable to return to continue working on his puppet as he found himself cornered by a relentless Stalker seeking answers, the enigmatic Mad Donkey. Unbeknownst to Geppetto, Sophia Monad stumbled upon his hidden puppet and used her power to awaken Pinocchio.
Gameplay[]
Geppetto is first encountered on Alchemist Bridge at the end of the Inside the House on Elysion Boulevard area. He is hiding in a carriage that is trying to be opened by the Stalker, Mad Donkey. Defeat him for a short cutscene to play showing P meeting him for the first time. Afterwards, he will tell the player they will talk more after they defeat the Scrapped Watchman at Krat City Hall. After defeating the boss, Geppetto will relocate to the upstairs study in Hotel Krat.
Speak to Geppetto and give him the Core to gain access to the P-Organ menu at the Geppetto's Tools chair. Player can then talk to him to learn more about other locations in Krat. After defeating the Eldest of The Black Rabbit Brotherhood in Malum District Town Hall, go inside the hideout to find the Portrait of a Boy. Return to the hotel and speak to Geppetto about the portrait. It will then be placed on the wall by the door of the study. After defeating Romeo, King of Puppets at Estella Opera House Stage, Geppetto can be found outside the back of the stage. Speak to him and proceed to Lorenzini Arcade. Geppetto will not return to the hotel until he is spoken to here.
Players can continue to talk to Geppetto at the hotel to learn more about the new areas. Once the Corrupted Parade Master is defeated, enter the hotel to find it ransacked and Geppetto kidnapped. Later on, Venigni will give players a decoded message from Romeo, King of Puppets. Listen to it at the Hotel Stargazer to learn that Geppetto was the one behind the Puppet Frenzy. Players can then choose to lie or tell the truth about the message to Venigni.
Geppetto is not encountered again until the end of Arche Abbey Upper Part - Inside. To reach him, players will have to get past Red Fox. After defeating her or choosing not to fight if Black Cat was not killed, the door to the cell block will open. Walk past several cells to the end to find Geppetto in a cell. Unlock it and speak to him to obtain the Arche Abbey Passageway Key. The key is used to unlock the door beside Geppetto's cell which leads to Arche Abbey Upper Part - Internal Bridge.
After defeating Simon Manus, Awakened God at Arche Abbey Cradle of the Gods, go to the center of the arena and take the lift down to Under the Abyss. Speak to Geppetto, who can be found in the center of the arena. He will then ask the player/P to give him the P-Organ.
Endings[]
Real Boy: If the player agrees to give Geppetto the P-Organ, Geppetto will embrace P before ripping the P-Organ from P's chest, killing him. Geppetto will then use the P-Organ and the Arm of God to revive Carlo, who is then instructed to kill all survivors in the hotel. If players choose to return to the hotel instead of New Game Plus, they will take control of Carlo. Geppetto will have placed all the survivors' Ergos into puppet bodies, transforming them into Carlo's personal servants. Geppetto is pleased with how events played out, especially as Carlo is acting like the perfect son for him; he claims that it now feels like "family". This ending will allow players to pick up Geppetto's Letter on his desk in the upstairs study which is needed to obtain The Story of One Father achievement/trophy.
Free From the Puppet Strings: If the player refused to give Geppetto the P-Organ, Geppetto will become disappointed in P's disobedience and unleash the Nameless Puppet. Once defeated, a cutscene will play that shows Geppetto rushing in to save P from the Nameless Puppet, who attempts to destroy the P-Organ. Geppetto will be impaled, distracting the boss long enough for P to kill it.
If the player has low humanity or chose to keep Sophia alive, the dying Geppetto will curse P, calling him a "useless puppet".
Rise of P: If the player has high humanity and chose to give Sophia peace, the ending will play out almost identically to the Free from the Puppet Strings Ending, with the following exception: as the dying Geppetto is about to speak, he is astonished to see P shedding tears. Geppetto finally realizes his mistakes and how human P has truly become before expiring from his wound.
Trivia[]
- Geppetto's design was heavily influenced by the art director's father-in-law.
- The golden pin on his coat shows the Freemasonry "Squares and Compass".
- Geppetto's full name is a mix of Geppetto from the source material and Giuseppe, which is Italian for Joseph and the origins of Geppetto's name.
- Unlike other characters in Hotel Krat, Geppetto does not respond to any emotes Pinocchio performs in front of him.
- This is presumably due to Geppetto seeing P as just a puppet rather than his son.
- There are various hints, especially in the endings, that Geppetto holds an idealized view of Carlo that does not truly reflect who Carlo was as a person nor takes into account Carlo's opinions or feelings. The revived Carlo in the Real Boy ending, of whom Geppetto clearly approves, is silently obedient and completely devoted to his father, carrying out his orders to slaughter the hotel's inhabitants without question, whereas the original Carlo hated his father for neglecting him and performed a defiant act to spite Geppetto by giving Romeo his necklace. This notion can be extended to the Rise of P ending: P, housing Carlo's Ergo, was becoming more and more human, and Geppetto failed to recognize that fact, in a sense not acknowledging his son's existence a second time until it was too late. A final clue is that Geppetto used Carlo's own corpse in his plans, even using strings to puppeteer it for combat, regardless of this likely being seen as an act of desecration to his child's memory and bodily autonomy.
- Geppetto is voiced by Anthony Howell, who voiced Margit the Fell Omen/Morgott the Omen King in Elden Ring.
