Plot[]

Setting[]

The game is set in the city of Krat. Thirty years ago, the Alchemists settled down in Krat and discovered the Relic of Trismegistus to be an Ergo mine. A talented inventor named Giuseppe Geppetto devised a specialized heart to serve as a power source for Puppets. This invention single-handedly transformed Krat from a modest, impoverished seaside town into a bustling city of marvels. Puppets became even more widespread after charismatic inventor Lorenzini Venigni partnered with Geppetto to mass produce them. To ensure the puppets could not harm humans, they were made to follow the "Grand Covenant" which prevents them lying, hurting others, and forces them to obey every command.

Puppets, with their remarkable capabilities, began to replace the workforce, handling menial tasks and serving as indispensable helpers. Ergo's importance soared to such heights that it became the very currency of the city. However, the city was soon plagued by the incurable Petrification Disease which blinds those infected and slowly petrifies their bodies before killing them. With the cause of the disease unknown, the city resorted to quarantining the slums to slow the spread but this proved to be futile. One day, the puppets were infected with a mysterious condition called the "Puppet Frenzy". It caused the majority of Krat's population to be subsequently killed. Geppetto set off to find a way to stop the frenzy and the disease but left behind a puppet he hoped would be their salvation: Pinocchio.

Synopsis[]

Pinocchio awakens in an abandoned train car in Krat Central Station. He is brought to life by a mysterious woman named Sophia and told to find her at Hotel Krat. He subsequently fights his away through the hostile puppets at the station and Cerasani Alley. Eventually he is stopped by the Parade Master who attempts to communicate with him but to no avail. Unable to understand the puppet, P proceeds to destroy it and travels to the hotel's front door. As explained by Sophia, P is not bound to the Grand Covenant and can lie his way past the hotel's security. Once inside, P meets Sophia as well as weapon craftsman Eugénie, hotel owner Antonia, and her faithful servant Polendina, a puppet unaffected by the Puppet Frenzy. Sophia informs P that he needs to find and rescue his creator, Geppetto as he is the only one who can stop the Puppet Frenzy.

Upon leaving the hotel, P is greeted by Gemini, a puppet housed in Monad's Lamp who promises to act as his guide through the city. Sometime later, P finds Geppetto hiding in a carriage from a Stalker named Mad Donkey on Alchemist's Bridge. After killing the Stalker, P meets his father for the first time. Promising to talk more later, Geppetto tells P to go to Krat City Hall to stop the Scrapped Watchman. Once defeated, P returns to Hotel Krat and speaks to his father. Geppetto asks him to find his friend, Lorenzini Venigni who went to stop the production of new puppets at Venigni Works but never returned. Upon arriving at the factory, P meets two Stalkers named Red Fox and Black Cat. They tell P that they had been hired to protect Venigni but abandoned him due to King's Flame, Fuoco. After going deeper into the factory, P successfully managed to defeat Fuoco and rescued Venigni and his puppet butler Pulcinella.

P later travels to Moonlight Town and comes across creatures known as Carcass, humans infected with the Petrification Disease that mutated through unknown means. Here he meets a mysterious doctor named Giangio who is searching for the Gold Coin Tree. He makes his way to St. Frangelico Cathedral and defeats Archbishop Andreus who had transformed into a hideous monster from his greed. P then travels to the Malum District where he meets Red Fox and Black Cat once more. The two offer to help P travel through the district which has become overrun with Carcass. Eventually, P finds the hideout of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, a criminal organization comprised of siblings who were terrorizing the district. He manages to kill the eldest brother which causes the others to swear revenge and flee. P then investigates the Brotherhood's hideout and finds a portrait of a boy that looks exactly like him. He then finds a secret passage that takes him to Hotel Krat's secret garden. Here P finds Giango as well as the legendary Gold Coin Tree and helps him pick some fruit in exchange for some items.

P returns to Geppetto and is told to go to Rosa Isabelle Street to stop the King of Puppets whom he suspects is the cause of the Puppet Frenzy. After receiving the key from Antonia, P travels to the street and meets several interesting people such as Julian The Gentleman, the White Lady, and the famous actress Adelina Corday. He later travels through the Estella Opera House and confronts the King of Puppets. After a short play that showed a puppet similar to Geppetto transferring a heart from one puppet to another, the King of Puppets himself appears. The King seems happy to see P and reaches his hand out in what appears to be a display of friendship but is quickly reproached by P. The two then fight but it soon becomes apparent that P is gaining the upper hand. During the course of the fight, the King seems to be trying to say something but P is unable to understand him. After destroying the King of Puppets, it is revealed that it was merely a suit for the real King, Romeo. Through it all, P is successful in destroying Romeo. After returning outside, P is greeted by Geppetto.

Geppetto tells P to make his way through the Lorenzini Arcade, which has been overrun with Carcasses, to reach the Grand Exhibition, where the Alchemists were rumored to have developed a cure for the Petrification Disease. After reaching the Grand Exhibition, P fights his way through hordes of Puppets and encounters Belle, a member of the Krat militia, who asks P to defeat Champion Victor, a famous strongman and fighter who became a massive, mutated brute due to the Alchemists experimenting in him. P eventually encounters Victor, and the two battle. Partway through the fight, Victor is injected with a blue substance, which further augments his already superhuman strength. Despite Victor’s Herculean strength and fighting prowess, he is ultimately defeated by P before he is impaled from behind and killed by a spear thrown by a person clad in heavy armor. Following this, P is met by Simon Manus, the leader of the Alchemists, who reveals that his “cure” is creating augmented humans through his experiments with the Petrification Disease, seeing it as the next step in mankind’s evolution. Simon gives P the key to the Saintess of Mercy Statue before inviting him to come to the Alchemists’ island base to see their work.

In order to reach the Isle of the Alchemists, P is instructed by Venigni (who had figured out a way to communicate through Ergo wavelengths) to travel to the Barren Swamp, which had become an illegal dumping ground for defective and broken Puppets, and find a Golden Ergo crystal. As he makes his way through the Swamp, P encounters Alidoro again, who claims he is looking for a legendary weapon located in the nest of a monster, as well as a Broken Puppet who had awakened an ego and wished to learn about emotions, the now-mad Owl Doctor who lost his mind after discovering the truth behind the Alchemists’ “Miracle Cure”, and Rookie Explorer Hugo, a novice treasure Hunter and devout fan of Alidoro, who was attempting to enter Hermit’s Cave to find the treasure within. While crossing a bridge, a violent earthquake occurs, with Gemini stating that it came in the direction of Krat Central Station. Moving forward, P finds the nest of the Green Monster of the Swamp, and battles the creature. Partway through the fight, the Monster inhabits the body of a broken-down Puppet (which faintly resembles the Scrapped Watchman), becoming the Puppet-Devouring Monster. Ultimately though, P succeeds in defeating the Monster and acquiring the Golden Ergo needed to reach the Alchemists’ island base.

P continues forward through the adjacent tunnel, which leads him back to Krat Central Station, which has collapsed from the earthquake and is overrun by Carcasses and corrupted Puppets, which posses organic tentacles like those of certain Carcasses. Making his way through the station, P encounters Atkinson, Belle’s partner, who has become infected with the Petrification Disease and is transforming into a Carcass. He asks P to give Belle a letter and tell her that he died fighting before he begins succumbing to his infection. P also comes across the train car where he first awakened and discovers a hidden workshop behind it, where he finds a letter from Simon thanking him for helping the Alchemists recover a “relic” which had been stolen by Geppetto. Continuing on, P encounters Robber Weasel, a Stalker-turned-thief who attempts to shake him down, but is ultimately killed by him. Exiting the station, P makes his way through the street before coming across a section of the city where massive growths of Kroud, a mineral which rapidly grows by absorbing Ergo, have erupted from beneath the ground and caused the streets and buildings to collapse.

P makes his way through the crumbling streets and eventually reaches the Collapsed Workshop Tower, battling his way through enhanced Alchemists, augmented by Simon’s serum, and one of their experiments, the Walker of Illusions, before he receives a frantic message from Sophia, saying that the hotel is under attack and pleading with him to return quickly. P and Gemini discover that the Stargazers no longer function, forcing P to make his way back to the hotel on foot. Just outside the hotel, P encounters the Corrupted Parade Master and battles it, ultimately emerging victorious against the massive Puppet once again. Entering the hotel, P finds the main lobby has been ransacked, with a massive banner reading “Hypocrite” hung over the hotel Stargazer. Sophia greets him, expressing her relief that P is alright, and reveals what has happened; Geppetto had been kidnapped by the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, Red Fox, and Black Cat, after Alidoro had shut of the hotel’s security. She ushers P upstairs, where everyone has barricaded themselves in Geppetto’s study. There, he speaks with Antonia, who confirms Geppetto’s kidnapping. In order to save him, Antonia gives P a secret melody to play on the piano in the hotel’s ballroom, which opens up a secret passageway to the Relic of Trismegistus.

Making his way through the subterranean caverns, P is soon met by the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, who attack him in order to claim their revenge for their older brother. After two of the Black Rabbits fall, the Eldest Brother emerges from a large coffin, having been reanimated by the Alchemists’ experimentation, and joins the fight. Despite his augmentations and enhanced strength, P manages to defeat him once again, putting him down for good, along with his brethren. Continuing on, P encounters Alidoro once more, and confronts him on why he betrayed the hotel and its inhabitants. Here, he reveals the truth; “Alidoro” agreed to help the Alchemists in exchange for assistance in leaving Krat, and that he was not actually the Hound, but his former partner, Parrot, who had killed the real Alidoro and taken his place, taking advantage of the Hound’s reputation for his own selfish purposes. P then has the choice to leave Parrot or kill him, with the latter option prompting Parrot to remark that Pmhas become more like a human before dying. Whatever the case, P continues ahead and discovers Venigni’s submarine, the Pistris, and powers it up with the Golden Lead-Acid Battery Venigni had made from the Golden Ergo, allowing him to travel to the Isle of the Alchemists.

Reaching the island, P steps onto the shore and is surprised to see Sophia waiting for him. Here, Sophia proclaims a shocking revelation; she had never actually been at the hotel, only a projection of herself, and her real body was imprisoned inside Arche Abbey, the Alchemists’ base. She reveals that Simon’s misuse of her power as a Listener had caused her soul to become fragmented, and that she had really awakened P as a means of freeing herself rather than saving Krat, apologizing to him for misleading him, but expressing her gratitude for all he has done for the people of Krat. Sophia bestows the remainder of her power onto P, and implores him to free her and give her peace, in the hopes that her body and soul will be reunited in a peaceful death. Making his way up the beach, P experiences the memories of a boy named Carlo, before he reaches Arche Abbey and begins his ascent, fighting his way through countless Carcasses and enhanced Alchemists. Halfway up, P encounters Test Subject 826 and helps him escape from the Abbey, before reaching the Ascension Bridge, where he encounters the armored person from the Grand Exhibition, Laxasia the Complete. P battles Laxasia, and partway through the fight, she sheds her heavy armor and activates the electric conductors in her sword, imbuing it with lightning. Without her armor, Laxasia is much faster and attacks more viciously, but P ultimately emerges victorious and defeats her.

Moving ahead, P enters the nearby chamber and makes a heart-wrenching discovery: Sophia’s real body, horribly mutated and strapped into a machine that draws on her power. She pleads with P to end her suffering, instructing him to absorb her Ergo into himself. P is left with a critical decision; fulfill Sophia’s wish and give her peace, or let her live and succumb to her agonizing pain. Whatever his choice, P then leaves the chamber and continues his ascent up the tower, with Gemini wondering if they made the right choice. Eventually, P encounters Black Cat and Red Fox once more, who had been instructed by Simon to slow P down. However, they both give P the option of letting him go ahead in exchange for one Gold Coin Fruit each. Whether he chooses to give them the Fruit or battle them, P eventually finds Geppetto in a holding cell, who asks him for one final request; to kill Simon and put an end to his machinations. Geppetto gives P the key to the door that lets him continue the final leg of his journey up the Abbey, finally reaching the Cradle of the Gods at the top of the tower, where he encounters Simon once more.

Simon, having used the Arm of God on himself and transformed into a hulking, mutated behemoth, proclaims that Ergo is the key to a world without lies and will unlock true human evolution before battling P. Despite his freakish strength, P proves to be a match for Simon, overpowering him and causing him to collapse. However, Simon would endure, pulling off his cloak and revealing a growth of twisted, branch-like structures where his left arm should be. The branches then open, revealing a pale-blue humanoid entity growing from his body, which makes contact with a massive arm in the sky and transforms Simon into the Awakened God. Continuing their fight inside of a pocket dimension, Simon unleashed flurries of energy blasts, as well as using his massive club, to attack P. However, despite his now godlike power, P still proves to be more than a match for him, and ultimately defeats him. Simon declares that Sophia has decided a winner, and wonders why she chooses to help P, and asks what he did with her, with P either answering that he had freed her or given her peace. Whatever his answer, Simon claims that his power to read minds was a curse he wouldn’t be able to bear without Sophia. Simon claims that it’s fine if he is gone, but cryptically warns P to be wary of Geppetto before he dies.

After this, P steps onto the platform in the middle of the arena, which descends Under the Abyss, where, much to Gemini’s surprise, they encounter Geppetto. He congratulates P and thanks him for all he has done, claiming that with the Arm of God and the vast amount of Ergo that P had collected, they had almost everything they needed to turn P into a real boy. Geppetto states that there is only one thing eft that they need; P’s heart. He asks P to give him the P-Organ, giving P the option to either obey his father or refuse, with the possibility for three different endings depending on P’s choices throughout the story.
