Pinocchio (otherwise known as P) is the protagonist and the player character of Lies Of P. He is the surrogate son of Geppetto, and is a puppet unaffected by the Frenzy. His choices throughout Lies Of P determine whether he remains a puppet or becomes a real boy.
Background[]
Following the death of his son, Carlo, a devastated Gepetto sought to bring his son back to life. He invented the P-Organ, which could absorb Ergo and transferred Carlo's Ergo into it. However, the first puppet he created from his son's body was too inefficient with Ergo and potentially destructive. Geppetto stored the puppet away and created a new puppet, Pinocchio, in a secret workshop within Krat Central Station. By transferring the P-Organ into Pinocchio, Geppetto knew that P would collect massive amounts of Ergo, enabling the P-Organ to withstand the original puppet's body. He also made P the only puppet unbound to the Grand Covenant so that he could collect Ergo unhindered. Additionally, Geppetto gave P an appearance identical to Carlo so that the collected Ergo would be refined so that P would have a personality as close to Carlo's as possible. Following P's completion, Geppetto departed and instigated the Puppet Frenzy to accelerate the collection of Ergo.
Pinocchio first awakens after being found by Sophia. After being told to find her at Hotel Krat, P fights his way through the train station and Cerasani Alley. Eventually, he is stopped by a massive puppet called the Parade Master. The Parade Master appears to speak to him, but P is unable to understand the puppet and proceeds to attack it. Afterward, he reaches the Hotel's front door and is able to lie his way past the Hotel's security. Once inside, P meets Sophia, Eugénie, and Antonia Cerasani. Sophia tells him that he needs to find Geppetto as he is the only one who can stop the Puppet Frenzy. Upon leaving the Hotel, P is greeted by a puppet housed in Monad's Lamp named Gemini, who promises to act as his guide through the city. P later finds Geppetto hiding from a Stalker named Mad Donkey in a carriage on Alchemist's Bridge. After killing the Stalker, P meets his father for the first time. Promising to talk more later, Geppetto tells P to go to Krat City Hall to stop the Scrapped Watchman. Once defeated, P returns to Hotel Krat and speaks to his father. Geppetto asks him to find his friend, Lorenzini Venigni, who went to stop the production of new puppets at Venigni Works but never returned. Upon arriving at the factory, P meets two Stalkers named Red Fox and Black Cat. They tell P they had been hired to protect Venigni but abandoned him after running into King's Flame, Fuoco. After going deeper into the factory, P successfully rescues Venigni and his butler, Pulcinella, and stops Fuoco.
P later travels to Moonlight Town and encounters The Atoned, a Stalker holding the key to the cable car he needs to progress further. The Atoned asks if P is a Stalker himself, prompting him to either perform the Stalker's Promise gesture (having acquired this should he encounter the Survivor at Venigni Works) and receive the key from her or do nothing, the latter option causing The Atoned to become hostile and attack him, forcing P to kill her and take the key. Taking the cable car up to the Path of Misery, P comes across creatures known as Carcasses, humans infected with the Petrification Disease that mutated through unknown means. Here, he meets a mysterious doctor named Giangio, who is searching for the Gold Coin Tree. Afterward, he makes his way to St. Frangelico Cathedral, where he meets Cecile, a servant of the Archbishop, and Alidoro the Hound, a Stalker and renowned treasure hunter. He defeats Archbishop Andreus, who had transformed into a hideous monster from his greed.
From here, P travels to the Malum District, where he meets Red Fox and Black Cat again—the two offer to help P travel through the district, which has become overrun with Carcasses. Eventually, P finds the hideout of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, a criminal organization comprised of four siblings who were terrorizing the district. He manages to kill the eldest brother, which causes the others to swear revenge and flee. P then investigates the Brotherhood's hideout and finds a portrait of a boy who looks exactly like him. He then finds a secret passage that takes him to Hotel Krat's secret garden. Here, P finds Giangio and the legendary Gold Coin Tree, and he helps him pick some Gold Coin Fruit in exchange for some items.
P returns to Geppetto and is told that he needs to travel to Rosa Isabelle Street to stop the King of Puppets, whom he "suspected" was the cause of the Puppet Frenzy. After receiving the key from Antonia, P travels to the street and meets several interesting people, such as Julian The Gentleman, the White Lady, and the famous actress Adelina Corday. He travels to the Estella Opera House to confront The King Of Puppets. After a short play that shows a puppet similar to Geppetto transferring a heart from one puppet who looks like Pinocchio to another, the King of Puppets himself appears. The King seems happy to see P and reaches out his hand in what appears to be friendship, but is quickly reproached by P. The two then fought, but it soon became apparent that P was gaining the upper hand. During the course of the fight, it seemed like the King was trying to tell him something, but P was unable to understand him. After destroying The King Of Puppets, it is revealed that it was merely a suit for the real King, Romeo. Through it all, P is successful in destroying Romeo. After returning outside, P is greeted by Geppetto.
Geppetto tells P to make his way through the Lorenzini Arcade to reach the Grand Exhibition, where there were rumors that the Alchemists were discovering a cure for the Petrification Disease. Making his way through the Arcade, P is contacted by Venigni via Stargazer, having discovered how to broadcast his voice through Ergo waves. Venigni informs P that he received a distress call from someone at the Grand Exhibition and asks him to investigate it. P eventually reaches the Grand Exhibition and finds his way inside, where he encounters Belle, a member of the Krat militia who was separated from her partner and trapped inside the Exhibition Gallery. She asks P to defeat Champion Victor, a modified human the Alchemists had been experimenting on. Making his way through the Exhibition, P eventually encounters and battles Victor. Despite Victor's inhuman strength and fighting prowess, P manages to defeat him before he is impaled and killed with a spear thrown by Laxasia the Complete before P is met by Simon Manus, leader of the Alchemists.
Manus reveals that the true purpose of his "cure" for the Petrification Disease is to create enhanced humans, saying those who survive the disease process are the next step in human evolution. He asks what P thinks he has created, with P either saying "hope for a cure" or "monsters." Regardless of his answer, Simon gives P the key to the gallery containing the Saintess of Mercy statue and invites him to come to the Alchemists' island base to see their work before leaving him to go on his way. Coming across the Saintess of Mercy statue, P is met by Sophia, who reveals the truth about the nature of Ergo; it is the souls and memories of humans in crystallized form due to the Petrification Disease. She also reveals that the Gold Coin Tree was created by the Alchemists experimenting on Listeners like herself.
Afterward, Pinocchio makes his way through the remainder of the Exhibition and comes across a tram. Here, P is reunited with Red Fox and Black Cat, who ask P for a Gold Coin Fruit, which they need to treat Black Cat's failing eyesight. Whatever P chooses, he approaches the tram and is contacted by Venigni again, who tells him that to reach the Isle of Alchemists, they would need Golden Ergo, which they would only find in the Barren Swamp. P enters the tram and travels to the Barren Swamp, inhabited by Carcasses and discarded Puppets. Here, Pinocchio reunites with Alidoro, who is searching for a legendary weapon located in the nest of a monster living in the Swamp. Further ahead, P encounters a Broken Puppet who has awakened an ego and asks P to teach him about emotions. In a nearby dilapidated shed, P encounters the Owl Doctor, a Stalker who had gone insane after discovering the truth about the Alchemist's "Miracle Cure" and tries to kill him but ends up being killed himself.
P eventually reaches a bridge and begins crossing it when an earthquake hits, which Gemini states came from the direction of Krat Central Station. Continuing, P encounters Rookie Explorer Hugo, a novice treasure hunter and fan of Alidoro, who is attempting to enter Hermit's Cave in pursuit of the riches within. Moving forward, P enters the nest of the Green Monster of the Swamp and battles it. Halfway through the fight, the Monster takes control of the body of a large Puppet (somewhat resembling the Scrapped Watchman) containing the Golden Ergo that Venigni needs and continues its attack. However, it is eventually defeated, and P acquires the Golden Ergo. Leaving the Monster's nest, P is met by Alidoro again, who proclaims his success in retrieving the legendary weapon. He thanks P for distracting the Monster, giving him the nickname "Alidoro's Best Bait."
Pinocchio moves forward and follows the path into an underground tunnel that returns him to Krat Central Station, now overrun with Carcasses and corrupted Puppets. Exploring the station, P comes across Atkinson, Belle's partner, who has become infected with the Petrification Disease and is transforming into a Carcass. Atkinson pleads with P to deliver a letter to Belle and tell her that he died a soldier before he begins to succumb to his mutation. P also returns to the train car where he first awakened and discovers a hidden workshop behind it, with a note from Simon thanking him for helping the Alchemists to recover a "relic" Geppetto had stolen from them. Further ahead, P is attacked by Robber Weasel, who attempts to rob him, but P proves to be more than a match for the Stalker and kills her. Exiting the station, P makes his way to an abandoned apartment that leads towards Collapsing Krat, where massive growths of Kroud, a mineral that grows larger by absorbing Ergo, have burst through the ground and caused the streets and buildings to break apart and collapse.
Eventually, P reaches the Collapsed Workshop Tower, fighting enhanced Alchemists and the Walker of Illusions, before he receives a frantic message from Sophia, who tells him that Hotel Krat is under attack and implores him to hurry back. Finding that the Stargazers no longer work, P is forced to return to the Hotel on foot, fighting through more Carcasses and corrupted Puppets. Eventually, P encounters the Corrupted Parade Master and is forced to battle it. After defeating it, P reaches the Hotel and finds it has been ransacked, with a giant banner reading "hypocrite" hanging over the Hotel's Stargazer. P meets with Sophia, who expresses her relief that P is all right and reveals what happened; Geppetto had been kidnapped by the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, Red Fox, and Black Cat after Alidoro shut off the Hotel's security. Sophia asks P to check on the others, who have barricaded themselves in the upstairs study room. At first, Eugénie refuses to open the door, initially mistaking P for the Hotel's attackers, but clears the way when she realizes that it is him. Entering the study, he is greeted by Antonia, who confirms Geppetto's kidnapping. In order to save Geppetto, P learns a secret melody from Antonia to play on the piano in the Hotel ballroom that opens a secret passage to the Relic of Trismegistus.
Entering the subterranean area and fighting a handful of Puppets, Pinocchio is met by the surviving members of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, hellbent on killing him to avenge their older brother. Partway through the battle, the Eldest Brother of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood bursts out of a large coffin, having been experimented on and revived by the Alchemists. Despite the Eldest Brother's inhuman strength and speed, P emerges victorious, killing the Black Rabbit Brotherhood and putting down the Eldest Brother for good. Moving forward, P comes across Alidoro and confronts him about why he betrayed the Hotel. Here, the truth is revealed; "Alidoro" betrayed the Hotel in exchange for the Alchemists helping him to leave Krat, and he is actually the Hound's former partner, Parrot, who killed and stole Alidoro's identity, taking advantage of the Hound's reputation for his selfish purposes. P has the choice of leaving Parrot or killing him, with the latter option prompting Parrot to comment that P has become more like a human before dying. Whatever his choice, P continues forward and comes across the Pistris, Venigni's submarine. Using the Golden Lead-Acid Battery Venigni made from the Golden Ergo, P activates the submarine and heads for the Isle of Alchemists.
Arriving at the Black Seaside, P is surprised to find Sophia waiting for him on the shore. Sophia reveals that she had never actually been at the Hotel and had only been using a projection of herself, with her real body being imprisoned in Arche Abbey, the Alchemists' base of operations. She tells P that Simon's misuse of her power had caused her soul to become fragmented and that her awakening him in Krat Central Station was primarily to save her rather than Krat. She expresses remorse for tricking P but is thankful for all he had done thus far to save Krat and its people, and grants P the remainder of her power, pleading with him to save her and give her peace in the hope that her body and spirit would be reunited with a peaceful death. Making his way up the beach, P experiences memories of Carlo's life: how Geppetto had left him at the Monad Charity House and Sophia introduced him to Romeo; how Carlo grew to resent his father for his absence in his life, and how he wished to be trained by the Legendary Stalker; and how he contracted and died from the Petrification Disease.
Entering the Abbey, P fights through hordes of Carcasses and enhanced Alchemists as he ascends the tower. He comes across Test Subject 826, where he aids in helping escape the Abbey before reaching the Ascension Bridge. Here, he reencounters Laxasia the Complete and fights her. Halfway through their duel, Laxasia sheds her armor and activates the electric conductors in her sword, imbuing it with electricity. Laxasia's speed increases significantly without her armor, and she becomes an even more significant challenge for P. Despite this, P ultimately emerges victorious and strikes Laxasia down. Entering the chamber ahead, P is met with the heart-wrenching discovery of the real Sophia, her mutated and tormented form strapped into a machine used to exploit her powers over Ergo. Sophia pleads with P to end her suffering, instructing him to absorb her Ergo into himself. P is left with a critical decision: let Sophia live and allow her to succumb to her agonizing pain, or follow her instructions and absorb her Ergo, causing her body to disintegrate. Whatever his choice, P then leaves the chamber and continues his ascent, with Gemini hoping they did the right thing.
Further up the tower, P reencounters Black Cat, who has been instructed by Simon to slow him down but agrees to let P pass in exchange for a Gold Coin Fruit. By doing so, P is allowed to move forward, with Black Cat asking him to spare his sister, claiming they would take the Gold Coin Fruit and leave Krat to start anew. If not, he and P fight, and P kills him. Further ahead, P meets Red Fox, who, depending on what choice was made with Black Cat, will either attack P to avenge her brother or ask for an additional Gold Coin Fruit. Giving her a Fruit will prompt her to say that with their amount, they might finally be able to cure Black Cat for good. She will also reveal her real name, Claudia, before allowing P to move forward and reach Geppetto. Freeing his father, P briefly speaks with Geppetto before he is given the key to the door nearby, allowing him to reach the Cradle of the Gods at the top of the Arche Abbey, where he reencounters Simon Manus.
Having used the Arm of God and become a hulking, heavily mutated creature, Simon declares that Ergo is the key to a world without lies and will unlock true evolution before attacking P. Despite his inhuman strength, P succeeds in overpowering him, causing him to collapse. However, Simon endures, removing his coat and revealing a mass of branch-like growths where his left arm should be. The branches open, revealing a pale-blue humanoid entity growing out of Simon's body, transforming him into the Awakened God. Simon and P continue their battle in a pocket dimension, with Simon unleashing powerful energy blasts in combination with his massive club. Despite this, he still proves no match for P and is ultimately defeated. Simon declares that Sophia has chosen a winner and that he envies P, wondering if Sophia helps him out of a sense of duty, contempt for Simon, or if she genuinely cares for P. He asks what P did with her, and he can reply that he either gave her peace or liberated her from Arche Abbey. Whatever the answer, Simon believes that his power to read minds is a curse and that he would not be able to bear it if not for Sophia. As he dies, Simon states it is fine if he is gone but ominously warns P to be wary of Gepetto.
After this, Pinocchio takes the Arm of God from Simon and uses the platform in the middle of the arena to descend Under the Abyss, where he encounters Geppetto, much to Gemini's surprise. Geppetto expresses his joy to his son, claiming that with the Arm of God and the vast amount of Ergo P had absorbed over his quest, they had almost everything they needed to turn P into a real boy. He then reveals that P's heart is one last thing they need to complete the process. Geppetto tells P to give him the P-Organ, leaving P with the choice to either give Geppetto his heart or refuse, with the possibility of three different endings depending on his actions throughout the story:
If Pinocchio agrees to give Geppetto his heart, Geppetto will embrace him before pulling the P-Organ out of his body, killing him. Geppetto then places the P-Organ into a new Puppet body and successfully revives Carlo. Returning to Hotel Krat, Carlo kills the survivors on Geppetto's orders so that he can transfer their Ergo into Puppet bodies, turning them into Carlo's loyal servants in Geppetto's twisted attempt to create the perfect home for his son.
If P has low Humanity or leaves Sophia alive and refuses to give Geppetto his heart, Geppetto will express his disappointment in P before summoning the Nameless Puppet to take the P-Organ by force. After P defeats the Nameless Puppet, he will lose his footing, and the Nameless Puppet will attempt to skewer P. However, Geppetto will jump in front of P and take the blow for him, chastising the Nameless Puppet for trying to destroy his heart. This allows P to punch the Nameless Puppet and tear its heart out before crushing it, killing it for good. As P holds the wounded Geppetto in his arms, he curses P for being a "useless Puppet" before dying. P then returns to the Hotel, where the inhabitants thank him for his help in ending the Puppet Frenzy and saving the city.
If P has high Humanity and gives Sophia peace by absorbing her Ergo and refuses to give Geppetto his heart, events will play out identically to the previous ending, up to the point where Geppetto sacrifices himself to stop the Nameless Puppet from harming P. As Geppetto lies dying in P's arms, P begins to cry, showing that Carlo has been revived after all. Geppetto apologizes to P for what he has done before passing away. Afterward, P goes out onto the balcony of Arche Abbey to see the sunrise before he comes across an inactive female Puppet with ethereal blue hair. P transfers Sophia's Ergo into the Puppet, an act which causes him to fall unconscious. Sophia awakens in the Puppet's body and smiles when she recognizes P in front of her, holding him in a manner mirroring the image of the Saintess of Mercy Statue and saying it is nice to see him. Sometime later, P returns to the Hotel, and the inhabitants thank him for saving the city.
Gameplay[]
Players begin the game by choosing a Combat Style, which determines Pinocchio’s base stats and what weapon he starts with. Pinocchio can level up by interacting with Sophia at Hotel Krat using Ergo collected from either defeated enemies or using Ergo stones. Additionally, he can wield a variety of weapons with different handles and blades, and can also be equipped with different Legion Arms.
Description[]
- Play as P, a puppet mechanoid, and fight through everything in your path to find this mystery person.
- But don't expect any help along the way and don't make the mistake of trusting anyone.
- You must always lie to others if you hope to become human.
Trivia[]
- His original name when he was human was Carlo, named after the author of the original book, Carlo Collodi.
- The name was also used in Guillermo del Toro's depiction of Pinocchio.
- While Lies of P marketing materials and the Neowiz staff referred to Pinocchio by his name and/or as "P", he is never actually called by either name at any point in the game, often being addressed simply as "Geppetto's puppet".
- In promotional material, Pinocchio is seen wearing the Blue Blood’s Tailcoat.
- As Pinocchio lies throughout the game, his shadow’s nose will grow longer, referencing how Pinocchio’s nose would grow every time he lied in the original story.
- Rather than telling the truth in order to become a real boy, Pinocchio must tell lies to act more human.
- This is only part of the equation however. P's Humanity grows as he acts human. Lying is one thing since puppets cannot lie, but selfless or emotionally-driven actions will also evolve his Humanity.
- As Pinocchio’s Humanity increases, he begins making grunting sounds when exerting himself (i.e. dodging, jumping, taking damage).
