Red Fox, real name Claudia Volfe, is a character and optional mini-boss in Lies of P. She and her brother Black Cat are first met in Workshop Union Culvert near the Stargazer.
Appearance[]
Red Fox is taller than her brother and very lean. She wears a distinctive full-face mask in the shape of a fox, ornamented with gold. Unlike her brother, her mask leaves her hair and neck exposed, showing that she has long auburn hair tied back into a bun. She wears the Red Fox's Hunting Apparel (a replica of which can be located via the Mechanical Cryptic Vessel). This consists of a red jacket, a white shirt with ruffled sleeves, a white cravat, white breeches, a belt, and black knee high riding boots. She also has two small gold bells hanging from her lapel. Fox carries a Dancer's Curved Sword as a weapon.
Personality[]
Red Fox is much more charming and careful with her words than her brother. She has a high opinion of herself and her combat, given that her first response to seeing P is to say that "admirers follow her everywhere". She claims to have an eye for style in combat and hasn't had a real challenge for some time. She views her brother as the only important thing in her life and values family a great deal.
Background[]
According to the Sweepers Branch Office Newspaper, Fox joined the Bastards over a year ago. She was ousted from succession to the Volfe line, as it was with other Bastards. At some point in her time as a Stalker, Fox claimed that a Cat within the Sweepers was a bastard to the Volfe family and was, as such, her sibling. This led the Sweepers to believe that Black Cat was a spy from the Bastards. He was put under investigation for leaking secrets and an unofficial interrogation with "no restraints to methods" was planned prior to the Puppet Frenzy. It is unclear whether this interrogation occurred or if this line of questioning was valid.
At some point, Black Cat and Red Fox left their respective factions and began working together. They were saving up money in an attempt to leave Krat, until Black Cat became ill, presumably contracting the Petrification Disease. Their savings were used to pay for medicine, which did not work. As Black Cat's disease spread to his eyes with the assumption that he would go totally blind, they began working with the Alchemists in order to get Gold Coin Fruit to treat his disease. However, it was noted that the dosage given was never enough to cure him - only enough to keep him going and never the full dose promised. The siblings worked whatever jobs they were given in order to get Gold Coin Fruit, often with the Alchemists.
Gameplay[]
Red Fox is first encountered with her brother in Workshop Union Culvert near the Stargazer. A conversation is had to tell Pinocchio that Venigni is nearby.
She and her brother are then encountered in the Malum District, just inside the Black Rabbit Brotherhood base. They will offer to help you fight some enemies outside of the base, as they want to get the treasure inside. However, if their offer is accepted, they only accompany you part of the way, as Black Cat has to take a breather.
They are then encountered by the ferry to the Barren Swamp, where Red Fox requests Gold Coin Fruit on her brother's behalf. If given, they will thank you and inform you that they are off to do a job for the Alchemists. The job in question, as you will learn upon returning from the Barren Swamp, is to assist in the attack on Hotel Krat and the kidnapping of Geppetto.
The final encounter with Red Fox is on the Isle of the Alchemists, where she bars the way forward. This encounter will have taken place after meeting Black Cat and her actions will be determined by that encounter. Either path will reward you with the Red Fox's Mask:
- If the player fought and killed Black Cat, then she will talk to Pinocchio briefly before fighting him in revenge for her brother's death.
- If Black Cat was given Gold Coin Fruit and spared, the player will have the option to talk with her. She will also request Gold Coin Fruit in order to avoid fighting her. Like her brother, refusing will lead to a fight, but giving her Fruit will skip the fight entirely.
Trivia[]
- The Red Fox's Hunting Apparel is reminiscent of clothes worn for fox-hunting, with the addition of ruffles.
- In the original book, the Fox and Cat both tricked Pinocchio of believing they are disabled (The Fox claims to be lame while the Cat is blind) to locate a Field of Miracles - where one might plant a coin in the ground and a money-fruit tree would grow. However, at the end of the story, they suddenly became impoverished, with the Fox acquiring a limp and losing his fur and tail, while the Cat developed blindness.
- The last name 'Volfe' is likely a reference to the Italian word for 'fox' - volpe.
- The description of the Red Fox's Mask implies that she knows that Black Cat is lying to her about being her brother, but views him as her sole family regardless.
